Job Summary :
The Senior Process Piping/Mechanical Designer will support the delivery of process piping design projects from various markets and industries. This role involves piping and equipment design work, specification coordination and implementation, leading other designers in small project teams, quality and coordination reviews, coordination with other engineering disciplines on projects, and client interactions. Field work requires experience and confidence to safely work around heavy industrial equipment, systems, and industrial environments.
Job Responsibilities: - Use AutoCAD Plant 3D, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk Navisworks, Autodesk ReCap to develop detailed designs/drawings including piping isometrics, piping plans and elevations, preparation and checking of P&IDs, process equipment layouts, site plans, piping support details.
- Site visits to take field measurements and make sketches to be used in design/drawings.
- Operate laser scanner to develop accurate point cloud files of heavy industrial facilities.
- Develop 3D models from scanned point cloud files.
- Work under the direction of a project engineer and/or work independently, with minimal guidance, on various sized projects.
- Lead a team of designers on various sized projects that require multiple skill sets and experiences levels to efficiently complete design packages.
- Assist with the estimation of project design hours as well as total installed cost (TIC) associated with projects.
- Perform periodic design reviews, ensuring that technical and quality standards are maintained.
- Assist with the preparation of contractor bid packages.
- Follow construction in the field and assist contractors to ensure that design standards are met.
- Incorporate field as-built red-lines to original designs to create record drawings.
- Possess a knowledge of construction materials, details, and techniques.
- Participate in client project design reviews.
- Effectively manage project files and client transmittals.
Education And Experience: - 5+ years of process piping design experience in manufacturing, chemical, refining and/or heavy industrial facilities.
- Associate degree in a related technology discipline or equivalent work experience.
- Highly motivated, self-driven, and capable of working in a semi-independent manner using critical thinking.
- Software proficiency:
- Autodesk Plant 3D, Autodesk Revit
- Autodesk Navisworks, Autodesk ReCap
- Microsoft Office
- Experience with process equipment installation designs. (heat exchangers, pressure vessels, pumping system, storage tanks, material handling, blowers, etc.)
- Experience leading a design team in the completion of piping and mechanical equipment projects.
- Works closely with other related disciplines to ensure coordinated design systems.
- Ability to create 3D piping and equipment models from P&IDs, piping specifications, and reference drawings utilizing theoretical and practical design knowledge.
- Operate laser scanner to develop accurate point cloud files of heavy industrial facilities.
- Develop 3D models from scanned point cloud files.
- Create 2D orthographic and isometric drawings from 3D models or field measurements in the development of construction documents.
- Able to provide QA/QC activities to ensure deliverables are clear, complete, and technically accurate.
- Working knowledge of industry standards such as API, ASME, ASTM, PIP.
- Experience providing accurate budgets and schedules.
- Excellent listening, written and verbal communication skills both internally and with clients.
- Demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to recognize discrepancies.
- Able to delegate and be delegated to.
Physical and Ergonomic Requirements: - Lifting/carrying: Carrying light loads related to field measurement equipment, and equipment cases weighing 15 lbs. or less.
- Dexterity: Ability to type using a keyboard with relative efficiency, ability to make handwritten notes and sketches indoors and outdoors at industrial plants and construction sites at any time of the year.
- Walking/Climbing: Ability to use multi-level stair towers and rung ladders unassisted.
- Visual Acuity: Ability to discern single-line and 3-dimensional computer images representing objects being designed or drafted.
- Hearing: Ability to hear safety alarms and signals while wearing hearing protection.
- Physical exertion: Ability to walk up to one mile on industrial plants and construction sites outdoors at any time of the year. Ability to work in protective clothing which may elevate body temperatures by several degrees for periods of up to 15 minutes without a break.
- Breathing: Ability to work while wearing a respirator or self-contained breathing apparatus.
