This position will be filled at either the Job Title Lower/Higher level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level

Security Specialist 2 $76,900-$122,200

The Physical Security Specialist-Lock & Key Program (Security Specialist 2/3) will serve as a team member of the Lock & Key Program within Protection Program Operations, reporting to the Lock & Key Team Leader. In this role, the Security Specialist 3 will be responsible for providing oversight of the Lock & Key Program at Los Alamos National laboratory (LANL) to ensure compliance with applicable policies and DOE directives.

Responsibilities include:
  • Providing programmatic oversight, ensuring compliance with Department of Energy Directives and LANL policies.
  • Conducting semi-annual inventories of Lock & Key assets as required by Department of Energy Directives.
  • Managing and updating Lock & Key databases, accounting for the approximately 130,000 Lock & key assets across the site.
Security Specialist 3 $92,300-$151,000

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level responsibilities include:
  • Providing mentorship to team members and overseeing projects of varying scope with minimal supervision.
  • Identifying areas for improvement within the program, performing internal assessments, and making recommendations regarding the implementation of safeguards and security measures.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated experience in or more the following security areas: classified matter protection and control, physical security, or related security topical area.
  • Experience communicating effectively to both technical and non-technical personnel through clear, concise and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and implement directives and policies to ensure compliance with safeguards and security requirements.
  • The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance and be enrolled in Human Reliability Program (HRP).
Additional Job Requirements for Security Specialist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Demonstrated experience successfully planning and leading projects of varying scope and size.
  • Experience making recommendations of appropriate and required security and safeguards measures for the protection of personnel, property, and facilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 6 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience developing and editing training plans, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A and DOE Order 470.4B.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle Business Systems, Facility Service Request (FSR), Microsoft SQL server applications, and UTrain.
  • Active DOE Q security clearance.
  • Enrollment in HRP.

Work Environment: Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environment, operate a motor vehicle

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens.

Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.


*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.


HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.


New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.


Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
